What is the best answer for the interview question “‘Tell me about yourself” for software professionals
The Best Way to Google Yourself
What’s the best answer for the interview question? Tell me about yourself for software professionals. If you know my work, you know that for most people, I believe that you think that that job description you’ve seen is accurate. And most of the time it isn’t.
So, whether you’re a software professional or any type of professional, the way I suggest starting any interview is by saying, hey, thanks so much for making time to meet with me. I really appreciate it. You know, I recall the job description, but I wanted to get your take on the role.
Could you tell me about the job as you see it and what I can do to help? And they’ll tell you their current thinking about the job so you know what’s different about the job description and what you were just told. And then from there, when you answer, tell me about yourself, you start off by talking in the typical way. I’ve been in the field now.
I’ve been a developer now for four years. For the last two years, I’ve been working for so and so where I’ve done this and that and this and that. Before that, I worked for such and such organization where I did this and that and this and that.
But what’s probably most relevant that my background for this role is my experience with and you tell them what firm it was, where I worked on and now what you do is connect the dots between what they told you they were looking for and what you’ve done. Keep your answer to about a minute and 15 seconds in length because you want to keep the conversation interactive. You want to keep them engaged because if you talk on too long, too often, people wind up losing their attention span and thinking about anything other than you.
So again, the typical answer to start off for about 20-25 seconds and then you bridge to the important part which is but what’s probably most relevant than my background for this role is my experience with and then you connect the dots.
