The answer is absolutely true and something I would teach junior recruiters when I trained them.
Are You Playing By Someone Else’s Rules?
How can you tell a hiring manager is lying to you? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. Visit my website at jobsearch.com community. I’ve got a lot there to help you, including resume critiques, content, the ability to hire me to coach you, and much, much more.
The answer to the question is going to sound like BS, but it happens to be true: How can you tell a hiring manager is lying to you? How can you tell everyone in that organization is lying to you? Their lips are moving.
Let me explain. The way you can tell is no one ever explains to you what happened to the last three people who were in that job. The last three people who sat at that desk doing the work that they’re going to ask you to do. No one ever talks about the turnover in the group. No one ever explains the issues that are in the group that drive people out the door. No one ever talks about how raises are so small. No one ever tells you the full story. They all put a happy smile button face on and talking with you about a great opportunity with a terrific team of people. “Have I mentioned we’re like family around here?”. Yeah, the ones in the holiday movies where people want to put a gun to their head and shoot them.
So, I’ll just simply say, don’t believe what they tell you. Check it out on your own. Figure it out on your own. And if you have concerns, talk to someone like me so I can help you sort it out. I’d love to help.
