I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff organizations for more than 40 years. I want to talk with you about one of those missing things that I just don’t see in enough resumes.
That thing that really helps you stand out from your competition. Now, I want to tweak this a little bit to be clear. Only if you’re posting your resume on a job board, do you work with this formula, you need to tweak it when you’re responding to job ads or you’re applying to a firm directly based upon a referral.
You’ll understand more as I go further. Here’s the tweak I want you to think about. What makes you stand out? Answer what did you accomplish in each of these organizations that you work for? What did you do that had any significance that affected the bottom line either positively by adding revenue or negatively by cutting revenue? Now, accomplishments are often a missing ingredient.
Firms . . . people always talk about what they did and how they went about doing it and if they were in IT, they’ll talk about the technology employed to do it. That’s fine and that should be part of how you answer your resume. But what did you accomplish? What did you actually do? Now, for a job board resume, you want to post a generic version of this.
When you’re applying to a firm directly or you’re being referred to a job, what you want to be doing is tailoring your accomplishments to demonstrate how they fit what the firm is looking for. Now, if that doesn’t blend, well, you may not be qualified to do the job. Recognize that.
However, your generic resume may not do a good enough job. So, always make the point of tweaking your resume to demonstrate the fit because otherwise, the classic saying, the broken watch is right twice a day. Sometimes you’re going to get interviews but most of the time, you won’t.
