Seriously. Would you go into court without a lawyer? Or diagnose a serious illness without a doctor?
How to Get More Interviews: Get Out and About
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and I coach people to play their professional and personal games big. I do that in my role as a headhunter and career coach. I do that from the standpoint of working with organizations to be more effective with their recruiting processes and help hiring managers be more effective.
I had a provocative title to this. Would you ever go into court without a lawyer? Of course not. You can come back with a very clever, I’ll go to small claims court.
Okay, fine. You win. How about diagnosing illness, that red spot on your skull or your forehead? Would you figure out without a dermatologist whether that might be cancerous? I don’t think so.
I think you’d rush to the doctor to have it dealt with right away. You should go into a job search completely blind with the deck stacked against you. After all, how many employers are really forthcoming with you? How many recruiters have you bounced from at this point and been dismissing as being idiots and yet you’re going through this job search without an ally? You’ve got questions along the way.
You’ve got concerns that you have about how things are playing out. Maybe you’re not handling things well, but you can’t operate out of ignorance because the impact of that is you lose. You don’t get the opportunity that you want so much.
You go on an interview for a job and paper sounds wonderful and you blow it. You’d negotiate badly and you wind up at the end of the negotiation with less money than you really find acceptable because you haven’t played your cards well. Or you don’t even get called on an interview because your resume and LinkedIn profile suck.
I’m telling you, get an ally in your search. You’ll find a link with this video to scheduling 30 minutes of time. Let me answer your questions about your job search.
A critique of your resume will cost more. I’ll just simply say I’ll ask for it just to make sure that I’m on the right page with you about what you’ve done professionally and so that we don’t waste any time talking about what you’ve done professionally. When push comes to shove, ask questions of someone that you trust.
