I have no idea what I’m doing wrong but, obviously, I have screwed something up.
Tough Interview Questions: Solve This Problem
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who helps people be more effective in the work environment. That can be with job search, with hiring, with managing and leading teams, a whole host of different things related to the workplace.
Now, the question I was asked is, “I’m trying to change jobs but I’m not getting calls from recruiters. What should I do?” So, I feel like Macaulay Culkin there. Here’s what’s going on.
And, you know, I know nothing about your background. So, let’s acknowledge that right off the bat. But when I dissect the search, what I find is a couple of things.
If you’re not getting interviews, if no one’s calling you, it’s for a couple of reasons. And I’m assuming you’re applying for jobs, of course. Reasons are your resume sucks.
Your LinkedIn profile doesn’t match up with your resume for some reason. You’re applying for jobs that you want but are not qualified for. You’re not making your resume clear enough how you fit the role that you want the recruiter to contact you about.
I’m going to add a couple of things from what I would normally say. Your LinkedIn profile is not keyword rich. Your resume is not keyword rich to draw the recruiters to you if they were finding you on a job board or on LinkedIn.
Those are the basic reasons why you’re not getting calls. You’re not communicating to recruiters, either corporate or third party, what you can do that relates to what their client is looking for. As such, your resume has to be tailored for each role.
Your LinkedIn profile has to demonstrate keywords that would be magnetic for a recruiter because they’re not going to call you for the heck of it. They’re trying to fill a job and make money, right? So, you have to do the work to draw them in. You have to be the honey and make the bear come to you, okay? I’m Jeff Altman.
