By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter adopts the voice of Jeff Foxworthy of “You might be a redneck” fame to talk about ways that job hunters will waste a hiring manager’s time and a recruiter’s time.
Overcoming Job Search Hurdles After 50
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And today is more of a . . . it’s a mistake video. That is, it’s mistakes people make.
I did an article for LinkedIn called, You Are Wasting My Time. Very popular, you know, within a couple of hours, over 600 views. So, I decided what I would do is give you an idea of what I had commented about that were mistakes people make.
Ready? Now, when I wrote the article, I said, imagine this being done like Jeff Foxworthy would do it. You might be a redneck theme. So, I’m going to do the Jeff Foxworthy voice.
My apologies in advance to Jeff Foxworthy. If you don’t care for the voice, just pretend it’s my normal voice. Ready? If you apply for a position that requires IT security experience, and your only experience with security is at the front door of a nightclub, you are wasting my time.
If you own a laundromat and apply for a position as director of human resources for a $750 million firm, you are wasting my time. If you apply for a position as a Java developer, and the word appears nowhere on your resume, you are wasting my time. Let me just switch the camera a little bit so I can scroll.
If you are a third party recruiter who submits a resume to me against a requirement that says no third party recruiters, you are wasting my time. If you live in Pakistan and apply for a position that says no overseas resumes, you are wasting my time. If your last job was in 2008 and provide no information about what you’ve been doing since Barack Obama became president, you are wasting my time.
This is one of my favorites. If you apply for a position as a Rails developer, and your sole qualification is your first name is Ruby, you are wasting my time. If you apply for a position where these key skills are in the headline, and you have none of them, you are wasting my time.
The “So What” Test for Every Resume Bullet Point
You get the point here? There’s a lot of things that people are doing to recruiters and hiring managers times. Think about it from their perspective. All they’re looking for, all I’m looking for to start off with is someone who appears to vaguely fit the requirements that I have here.
So, be courteous. As I point out here, and this one I won’t do with an accent, if you submit your resume four times in a 10 minute period for the same job, you’re wasting people’s time. And this is, again, one of the fun ones.
If you apply for a job as an IT delivery manager, and your sole qualification is you deliver Chinese food on a bicycle, you are wasting my time. This is what we as recruiters, hiring managers and corporations have to contend with. A little more than Viagra or Cialis emails spam to us all day long.
The list of emails I had in the article had come to me in the last in the previous 36 hours and understand part of that time I wasn’t working or sleeping. So, when all is said and done, make it easy. Make it easy for the reader to see that you’re fit.
And if you are not a fit, do not send your resume there wishing and hoping and thinking and praying and spamming. So, this is Jeff Altman. Hope you found this video helpful.

I also want to say, if your current firm is trying to hire someone, send me an email at the address below. Let me know who to contact and whether I should mention your name. I’d love to help your firm staff positions.
