Is It Common for Employers to Automatically Disqualify Applicants After One Rejection?
Yesterday, I was watching the New York Giants play the Patriots yet again. And yet again, the Giants were considered a team that be greatly overmatched by New England. In the previous three games between these two teams to win the Super Bowl, one in New England, the Giants were heavy underdogs, came from behind to win. Win late in the game. When in the last minute or two, and yesterday was no different except the outcome Where New England, this time, played the part of the team that was badly manhandled. Got the ball with a minute and a half left to play, drove the field to kick a field goal that won the game with one second left.
This reminds me of how often people take shortcuts, thinking that that’s good enough. Yesterday there was there were no shortcuts. both teams played hard. Mistakes were made. Key moments of the game that kind of wrap things up for the Giants, they let go.
There was a moment where Odell Beckham Jr. dropped the ball. He caught it but the weird way of NFL rules, he didn’t hold the ball enough. The outcome was it was considered an incomplete touchdown pass. That would have wrapped up the game right then and there.
When New England got the ball for their final drive, the first pass that Tom Brady threw was almost intercepted. It was right in the hands of one of the defensive players who dropped the ball when he hit the ground. Incomplete. New England drives the ball, kicks a field goal with one second left.
Again, the lesson for Job Hunters is there’s no moment in your job search that’s less important than another. At the end of the day, even when you get the offer, your performance may cause you to lose money because you took a shortcut. You ticked someone off. You just didn’t execute your game plan well enough. The result was they didn’t feel compelled to offer you as much as you would have liked.
When push comes to shove, every single moment of your search has to be executed at a high level. Good enough isn’t. Giants learned that yesterday. New England has learned that a couple of times against them.
When push comes to shove, remember, no details unimportant.
