Sinclair and Nexstar announced they will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ across its ABC affiliate stations. What we know.
Howard Stern defends Jimmy Kimmel after ABC suspension
Radio host Howard Stern spoke out on Jimmy Kimmel’s ABC suspension, recalling his own censorship battles.
Jimmy Kimmel may be returning to late night television soon, but his show will not air on nearly 70 ABC affiliate stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group or Nexstar Media Group.
Sinclair, in a statement, said it will be “preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming,” starting Tuesday night, the eve of Kimmel’s return following the late-night host’s suspension over his comments on Charlie Kirk’s death.
“Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” the statement said.
The local station owner had previously demanded that Kimmel apologize to Kirk’s family and make a donation to the slain activist’s organization, Turning Point USA.
In a similar move, the next morning, on Sept. 23, Nexstar announced its owned and partner television stations “affiliated with ABC Television Network will continue to preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!'”
“We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve,” Nexstar said.
Here’s a look at the stations that will not be airing ‘Kimmel.’

Why was Jimmy Kimmel suspended?
On Sept. 17, ABC announced it was “indefinitely” suspending “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after comments from host Kimmel about the arrest in the shooting death of conservative podcaster Kirk.
Kimmel, in a monologue, had said “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Kirk, cofounder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. A suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with his murder.
Disney-owned ABC’s decision came after the head of the Federal Communications Commission appointed by President Donald Trump expressed ire at the host’s comments and broadcaster Nexstar announced intentions not to air the show.
When is ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ returning?
Kimmel is expected to return Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 11:35 p.m. ET/10:35 p.m. CT, although any affiliates owned by Sinclair or Nexstar won’t be carrying the show.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” Disney said in a Monday, Sept. 22, statement to USA TODAY. “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
The reversal follows a backlash in Hollywood and a mounting boycott campaign against Disney. Kimmel, meanwhile, is yet to make a public statement.
Where can I watch ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’?
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” generally airs on ABC from Monday to Friday at 11:35 p.m. ET/10:35 p.m. CT.
Episodes of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” are available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
